chapter BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. gumm, walter L., was born at Marseilles, 111., in 1857. He attended the public schools and the Mary A. Pickens Seminary in Marseilles. Mr. Gumm has been in the hardware business for fifty-three years. His collection of peonies, which numbered ten varieties in 1883, now consists of some eleven hundred. His seedlings were commended at the National Peony Show at Fort Wayne. Mr. Gumm has lived in Remington, Indiana, since 1882, and is a director and treasurer of the Commercial Peony and Iris Growers Association. |

APS: History of the Peonies and their Originations (-1975): WALTER L. GUMM - Remington, Indiana Gardens later managed by Miss Grace Ott, Remington, Indiana. BLUSHING BRIDE (1930) - Single, early. Large blush. BRILLIANT - Single, early, red. CARDINAL - Midseason, red. CORNELIA STONE (1929) - Double, midseason. A charming light pink of splendid form. EDITH E. GUMM (1930) - Double, midseason. An immense flower of medium light pink on extra strong stems. Very large foliage. EDITH ESTELLE (1926) - Double, midseason. Medium pink. FLORENCE BOND (1936) - Double, late midseason. Large, globular flowers of pure white slightly tinted pink at first. Medium height, strong stems. Extra good. FRANK NEWBOLD - Jap, midseason. Deep pink. FRANK WADE (1930) - Double, late midseason. A very fine light pink, good form, on fine stems. GARNET (1926) - Double, midseason. Dark red. First named DORA HART. GEORGE H. HART (1935) - Double, late midseason. White of distinction. GOLDEN DAWN (1923) - Double, late. White guards and bright yellow collar. Stems excellent. One of the best near yellows. GOLDEN MORN (1930) - Single, white. GRACE OTT (1923) - Double, midseason. Dark red with many stamens showing. LILLIAN GUMM (1921) - Double, midseason. Large fluffy flower of medium pink. This often makes an exceedingly large showy flower. MARGARET LOUGH (1929) - Double, midseason. Rather flat attractive flower of white with pink tints and stamens showing to light up the flower. MRS. FERN LOUGH (1930) - Double, midseason. Great pale light pink with strong stems and charm of a high order. MRS. W. L. GUMM (1929) - Double, late. Tall beautiful flower of delicate light pink. Very fine. A white variety has been sent out for this. OMAHAMA (1926) - Very tall and very large cerise red guards, staminodes tipped yellow. Exceedingly showy. PRIDE OF REMINGTON - Midseason, deep pink. Some say it is a Jap, some a double. It was discarded . ROSE GUMM (1930) - Double. This gave promise of being a very fine light pink, but the roots became diseased and it is not known if there is any good stock of it now. THE GRACE (1930) - Double, late. A very beautiful flower of delicate light pink or blush. Good strong stems. VERA (1923) - Very large purplish red. WARREN ROY - Double, deep pink. 20. W. L. GUMM (1929) - Double, midseason. Beautiful white well built up on medium height stems. No. 20 is the true variety. A true Grade A peony. |
