BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE PEONY
By A. P. Saunders
THE following bibliography is an extension of the one J_ which was prepared by Mr. J. Eliot Coit for the Cornell Bulletin No. 259, in 1908.
The literature of the peony has enormously increased during the twenty years that have intervened. Important contributions are few and far between, and an index of them alone would not take more than a page. Brief and casual references in garden literature are innumerable, and to index all of them would be a herculean and a fruitless task. I have tried to steer a middle courseto cite all really important references, to omit those that had no significance whatever, and with the large number that lay between these extremes to pick out those that have some quality in writing or material which make them worth looking up for inspiration or information.
Some English gardening papers, notably The Garden and The Gardener s Chronicle^ have for many years contained frequent references to the peony. Some of their short notes with good illustrations are of great value to anyone whose interests extend beyond the beaten track of ordinary garden peonies. In more recent times American gardening magazines have accumulated a mass of literature on the peony calculated to stagger the bibliographer. Several of these magazines now give the peony a department by itself to which correspondents may send their enquiries why their plants do not bloom, or what they should do to keep ants off the buds. But in even those departments there also appears from time to time something of value or interest. I cannot hope that I have successfully picked out all the wheat and left all the chaff, but that is what I have aimed at. The references of later date than 1926 are necessarily incomplete and include only such as happened to come to my hand.
To construct a bibliography of peony reference from the standard books of a botanical library would be quite useless. Every large work on gardening gives at least a paragraph to the peony; the larger the book, the larger the paragraph. Going back to early works, our plant will be found in Gerard's "Herbal" (1597), in Parkinson's "Paradisus in Sole" (1629), in Bacon's

famous essay, and in Shakespeare, as well as in lesser writers. One could cite still earlier references to it; thus, Alexander Necham, born in 1157, names it as one of the plants that should not be wanting in a "noble" garden. It need scarce be said that the peony of those earlier references was never the Chinese peony of our gardens, but always one of the European species, usually P. officinalis or P. corallina.
Coming to later and our own times, the plant will be found in the books of Mr. William Robinson, of Miss Jekyll, of Mrs. Francis King, and of many other writers; while in the vivid pages of Reginald Farrer's books may be read the most glowing pictures of the peony that I know offilled with that fire of enthusiasm which animated Farrer's pen when he wrote of flowers that he loved.
Further, every work that deals with the flora of special geographical regions must have its space for the peony, unless, indeed, it were the flora of southern Africa or of South America, where whatever peonies there may be remain still to be discovered. So we might name:
Forbes and Hemsley, Index florae sinensis
Bretschneider, European Botanical Discoveries in China.
Ruprecht, Flora Caucasi.
Boissier, Flora orient'a/is.
Matsumura, Index plantarum japonicarum.
Fedde, Repertorium novarum specierum regni vegetabilis.
and many, many such. But, most of them being in Latin, the average reader will have little joy of them. They are for the botanist. '
There is not in existence an extensive modern study of the genus. The two comparatively recent monographsthose of Baker and of Lynch, the discussion of the genus in Nicholson's Dictionary of Gardening, and nearer our own time, that in Bailey's Cyclopedia of Horticulture, and somewhat less technical in character, the pages in Mrs. Edward Harding's "Book of the Peony"these are the best sources for anyone who wishes to learn about the various species which tangle themselves together under the genus Pseonia. But these, where at all complete for their time, are now out of date, and where they are modern they are rather too brief to be satisfying. The "Index Kewensis" is indispensable as a starting-point for any study of species.
