One of the tallest of all the Lutea hybrids. A columnar shape whose large heavily citrus scented flowers are lemon yellow set off by brilliant raspberry-red flairs. I love yellow and this is my favorite of all the yellows...vigorous, fragrant, and some years reblooming in fall along with bronzing foliage. Natures work of art. American Peony Society Gold Medal.

HIGH NOON (Saunders, 1952).

HIGH NOON:Pure yellow flowers can be seen from afar. Sweet fragrance, one of the most popular of our tree peonies. Midseason. Vigorous grower. Rebloomed here last fall, what a wonderful September treat. APS Gold Medal. Limited supply. 50"

Flower Form: Semi-double, Staking: No, Height: > 90 cm, Bloom Period: Week 3, Fragrance: Good, Side Buds: No, Comments: Just as the French hybridizers worked with the yellow species P. lutea to create such hybrids as ‘Souvenir de Maxime Cornu’ and ‘Chromatella’ so did the American breeder Professor A.P. Saunders, albeit about 50 years later. ‘High Noon’ is part of the group he called the Golden Hind Group. Winner of the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1989. The flowers sit atop the foliage. Even with our harsh winters, this peony reaches well over 1 m. here. If the fall is warm and long, it will often rebloom. This picture was taken in the fall of 2006. Though the spring bloom period is much more prolific, a flower or two in the fall is a lovely surprise.
