17.08.2003 Wohlbehalten aus den Picos de Europa zurück! Zwar haben wir uns vorgenommen, nicht wieder im Sommer nach Spanien zu fahren, aber zu etwas kühleren und besonders nicht so vollen Zeiten kann ich mir diese Gegend sehr schön vorstellen. In Frankreich haben wir ab Orléans ein paar Loire-Städtchen und Schlösser angeschaut, waren in Blois, Poitiers, Tours, Cognac, Saintes und Royan und mit der Fähre rüber, dann das Haut-Médoc lang bis Pauillac und Margaux nach Bordeaux (in 3 Tagen mit vielen Zwischenstopps). Dann die Küste runter bis Bayonne und nach St. Jean Pied de Port, von dort mehrere Einstiegs-Wanderungen. Weiter im Aspe-Tal für 3 Tage und dann im Ossau-Tal 3 Tage. Danach über Pamplona, Logrono und Burgos nach Potes in den Pico de Europa für 3 Tage. Anschließend die Küste lang heimwärts mit Badestopps und vielen hübschen Küstenörtchen. Leider hat José Almandoz ein gebrochenes Bein, aber das Iturraran-Arboretum bei Zarrautz ist sehenswert, wie das Baskenland überhaupt, allerdings auch voller Kontraste – in etwa wie das deutsche Ruhrgebiet mit viel Gelsenkirchener Barock. Auf der Rückreise Stopps in Bourg sur Gironde, Rambouillet und Cambrai. Gestern noch zur Beiratssitzung der GdS auf der Jahrestagung in Münster. Nach 3 Wochen Urlaub hat man wieder Lust zum Arbeiten und auf den Computer. Vielen Dank für die vielen eMails, die in meinem Postfach gelandet sind.

Relaxed and healthy back from a 3-weks trip to the Picos de Europia in Cantabria/North Spain. Though we have decided not to visit Spain in summer again, I could imagine that it is a very fine destination in May or June or September, not as hot and not as crowdy. On the way there we stopped in many places in France, Were in Orléans and many Loire-cities and chateaus visiting Blois, Poitiers, Tours, Cognac, Saintes and Royan, taking thre ferry to the Haut-Médoc and slowing down for bathing and looking at many of these very snobby vineyards with the amazings castles around Pauillac, St. Julien, St. Estephe, Margaux ... What a beautiful countryside! Reaching Bordeaux on the 3^rd day. From there down the Cote d'Argent with bathing-stopps to Bayonne, and residind in St. Jean Pied de Port for 3 nights and making the first warm-up tours in the mountains. Than 3 days in Vallée d'Aspe, 3 days in Val d'Ossau in very good weather for mountain walks (above 2000 m it was not as hot). Later crossing Navarra, Rioja and Burgos provinces to Potes in Picos de Europa. Very nice, but very crowded, we found only very late a small hotel-room. 3 days later the way back along the north-spanish coast with many stops at these small cities and bathing in the sandy bays. Unfortunately I found out that Josè has a broken leg, but his Iturraran Arboretum near Zarrautz is sworth a visit. In France again stops in St. Jean de Luz (also overrun by the masses, but also nice), and Bourg sur Gironde (crazy, that the river flows backward!). Rambouillet was disappointing, the traffic around Paris was quicker than expected, last stop in Cambrai (the last fine dinner in France – ouch! again 2 kilograms more). Yesterday the AGM of the german perennial Society in Muenster. After 3 weeks it looks possible to go to work again.
