TOURANGELLE. (Dessert, 1910.) 9.4.

Double type; large; late. A compact, almost bomb-like flower of many irregularly disposed petals; pale cream-white with a tan suffusion in the depths, toning to flesh-pink in the center; mild, pleasant fragrance. Medium height; floriferous; bending stems. Rather small foliage.

A handsome, very richly colored flower which requires time to develop to its best form. Needs support if used for decoration in the garden.

"The color might better be described as a pale apple-blossom-pink. At its best Tourangelle is one of the most beautiful of all peonies." Saunders.

"Not a very strong grower. Stems inclined to be weak."—Boyd.

"There is probably no peony with greater refinement and delicacy."—Engle.

Janis Holdridge (Oct 09 2001 on yahoogroups)
Leon & group; John Wister, in his book "The Peonies" describes "Tourangelle-(Dessert 1910) Double. A distinctive white with a pale salmon pink center lit by yellow sulphur glow make an unusual color combination which is highly valued. However, this variety may bloom poorly due to its vulnerability to thrips. Use DDT before the buds open. Flowers are compact, high, and round. The 3' stems are weak. Blooms late, inexpensive." Speaking from my personal opinion, Tourangelle is one of my favorite peonies, even though it did become floppy this year (it's third in my yard) after all the rain we had this year. It's blossoms were plentiful, and fragrance unsurpassed! Please don't let this discourage anyone from adding it to their collection(s). No thrips on mine. I saw it in the Minnesota Peony Show, a few year ago and fell in love with it. This year we held a family reunion here and I had a big bouquet in the bathroom. Everyone had commented how lovely those flowers were. I told them it was my version of aroma therapy! The color is absolutely stunning, a soft salmon pink, white cream blend, on a nice size 4"-5" flower head. I know I took some pictures and have been scurrying to find them but can't locate them at this time. The bush took each year of the three to become the now 3' diameter upright bush as it stands today.A lways growing, Janis Holdridge Group member, WI, Zone 4

Tourangelle (Dessert, 1910) Apple-blossom pink, double, fragrant, midseason, 36" tall. lactiflora cultivar. Apple-blossom pink double with cream-white toning at base gives a romantic effect. Needs support in the garden. Intoxicating fragrance.
