type: japanese tree peony (Botan)

(Japanese tree peony - Striped and Variegated Flower group) As the photographs show, the striping of this flower has no fixed form. This variety arose from a bud mutation in Taiyo, and except for the variegation of colour the plant resembles Taiyo in every respect. Stigmas and sheath are red. Midseason.

Ariga (1993)

SHIMA-NISHIKI (Inselbrokat) Violettrot. Spätblühende große Blüte in achtfacher Blüte.

'Shima Nishiki' Sorte japanischer Herkunft. Aquarell Seite 54, Foto Seite 85.

ricecreek:

SHIMANISHIKI:Very full flowers, this is the rare red and white candy striped tree peony. Don't be surprised if it blooms with all red flowers or all white flowers as it is getting established.

Margitta Stewart 2007:

Shima Nishiki. (Island Brocade). Japan. Japanese suffruticosa. Semi-double, red and white striped flowers, sometimes all red or pink or pink and red or white etc... May bloom all red for a couple of years only to bloom with striping the next. A hardy plant, but should be planted in a well ventilated area to prevent disease from wet/humid conditons. Reported as a mutation of the cultivar 'Taiyo'. Consistently inconsistent. Superior to all other floral variegations in woody peonies. Fertile both ways.
